Sports Games For Crazy Names

How did some of the most popular sports games get their names? Have you or your sports fanatic friends spent countless sleepless nights wondering about it? If you have, well, here's my Dodo un-theory. It may be wrong, but then again it may not be right either.

Football was easy. It was either someone got kicked in the butt, and said, “Why not I'll call it football.” Or, someone kicked a ball with his foot and named it football. Pick one just for fun.

Basketball was even easier. Someone shot a ball into a peach basket. Or, one person caught a butterfly in a net and declared, “See what you get in your net” and called it basketball. You choose which one - you can't lose.

Gymnastics was a bit harder—it's pronounced Jim-nasty-tics. Here's what I heard from an unreliable source. Jim, a movie director, was filming with his camera crew one day in a tick-infested forest. He was minding his own business when hundreds of ticks attacked him. He tried all kinds of acrobatic, tumbling, and body movements to get them off, but it was a no go. The cameras, meanwhile, were rolling and got it all on film. One of his actors sent it to an Olympic Committee member who said, “Poor Jim, those nasty ticks sure are murder.” Well that inspired him to coin a new word and sport—Jim-nasty-tics.

Well, you probably figured it out that I made the whole thing up. But then again, maybe I did.
